Nothing beats the sentimentality, warmth, and emotion of a home wedding, and Brittany & Kevin’s day was exactly that. Their backyard home wedding wasn’t about production or perfection: it was about love, legacy, and letting the celebration unfold naturally, all with the deep significance of roots in family property.
Brittany and Kevin met while working at an aerospace company, and their relationship included long distance, heartbreak, and ultimately reconnection after Kevin’s mother passed away. Brittany reached out during that season, and the two found their way back to each other, in a backstory that made the emotion of the wedding day feel especially present from the moment our team arrived.
A lakefront wedding with heart
The wedding took place at Kevin’s family home in Orlando, a property originally built by his grandfather and passed down through generations. From a storytelling perspective, this wasn’t just a “backyard wedding” - it was a celebration anchored in family history.
The backyard opens up to the lake and includes a shaded lanai and boat dock, which naturally became focal points throughout the day. With full trees blocking direct sun starting in the early afternoon, the property offered surprisingly ideal lighting for an outdoor ceremony and portraits.
If you’re planning your own private home wedding in Orlando, this day was a great example of how meaningful a non-traditional venue can be when the location itself plays a central role in your family’s story - and your own love story.
Big emotions & backyard festivities
When we arrived, Brittany was getting ready inside the house while Kevin was very much in “quarterback mode” coordinating vendors, checking timelines, and making sure everything was running smoothly. Despite his more serious demeanor, it quickly became clear that Kevin is deeply emotional, and that contrast between his composure and his feelings became one of the most memorable parts of the day.
Their first look took place in a small side garden on the property, and Kevin immediately broke down in tears. The moment was quiet, private, and incredibly genuine: one of those first looks where time seems to slow down.
That emotion carried through the ceremony as well. Kevin teared up during vows and again as the ceremony began, while Brittany stayed fully in her element, calm and vibing her way through the moment.
The outdoor ceremony flowed directly into cocktail hour, which, like many home weddings, presented a small challenge when it came to family portraits. Guests were understandably more focused on drinks than regrouping for photos, but with help from Asher of A-List (who literally handed us a microphone), we managed to wrangle everyone back into the backyard and keep things moving.
The reception unfolded across both the house and the lanai, creating a relaxed indoor-outdoor flow that encouraged guests to wander, talk, and settle into the space naturally. Speeches from both dads were emotional in very different ways: Kevin’s dad delivered a heartfelt moment, while Brittany’s dad kept things short and sweet, clearly fighting back tears.
Portraits around the property
All couple and family portraits took place on the property itself, using the boat dock, backyard, and garden areas. While angles were somewhat limited due to the layout and aesthetics of the home, working within those constraints created images that felt honest and location-specific.
Photographer Pro Tip: For backyard weddings, walk the property with your photographer earlier on your wedding day. Understanding where the light falls and how the space will be staged makes a huge difference in how smoothly portraits and transitions go.
Vibes, dancing, and a so-them first dance
After dinner, Brittany and Kevin shared their first dance to Kokomo by Jimmy Buffett, which was less of a dance and more of a vibe. It was hilarious, completely on brand for the two of them, and perfectly reflected their playful, relaxed dynamic.
Instead of a traditional cake cutting, they opened the dessert table using a garden trimmer when regular scissors couldn’t cut the ribbon in a moment that felt very “home wedding energy.” From there, the party shifted inside the living room, where the celebration continued long after formal coverage ended.
Brittany and Kevin’s wedding day was emotional, chill, and ultimately a full-on rager once the formalities wrapped. Watching them joke with each other, support one another emotionally, and settle into the joy of the day made it clear how deeply connected they are.
For couples planning an Orlando backyard wedding or a celebration on family property, this day was proof that intimacy and meaning often outweigh scale and spectacle. As an Orlando wedding photographer, these are the kinds of weddings that stay with you not because of what was staged, but because of what was real.
