The dream team: how & why we shoot with a studio team model

If you’ve been looking for a wedding photographer, you’ve probably come across the term “team” or “studio” photographers and might feel a bit unsure about what that actually means.

Who is actually showing up on our wedding day?

Are we missing out by not booking the “main” photographer?

Will our photos still look the same?

These are all completely valid questions and honestly, we’d be asking the same thing in your shoes.

So in this post, we’re breaking down exactly how our team model works, why we’ve chosen to utilize a team model in our studio, and what you can expect when you book with one of our team photographers. Our goal is to help you feel confident in choosing the right photographer for your wedding day, whether or not you decide a team model is a good fit for you.

What is a photography team model?

At its core, a team model simply means that instead of booking one specific photographer, you’re booking our studio as a whole. When you work with us, you’ll be paired with one of our photographers from our carefully trained team. Each of our team members has been taught our approach and works within the same style and overall experience that you see reflected throughout our work.

From your perspective, the experience is still guided and supported by our studio rather than passing you off to a photographer and leaving you to handle things on your own. The main difference with a team model is that the photographer capturing your wedding day will be a member of our team rather than a single “lead” photographer.

Why we chose a team model

During my early years as a solo photographer, I (Michael) quickly learned that life can sometimes get in the way of serving my clients to the high standard I set for our studio. A team model became necessary to ensure that every Author Made couple received the same level of dedication and attention to detail that we strive for.

With a team model, we are able to create a more reliable experience from the start. There is always a level of backup in place, and our photographers aren’t working in isolation but part of a system that is designed to support them as well as our clients.

It also allows us to focus deeply on consistency. Instead of every wedding depending on one person’s energy, workflow, or approach on a given day, we’ve built a shared standard across our team so the experience and final gallery feel cohesive no matter who is photographing your wedding.

Ultimately, this approach lets us deliver what matters most to our couples: a smooth, guided experience and a final gallery that feels true to the portfolio you’ve come to expect.

What stays the same…and what’s different

With our team model, everything you’re booking us for (the look, the feel, the guidance) stays the same. But there are a few things that look slightly different behind the scenes.

From the very beginning, all communication is directly with Michael. From your initial call to timeline planning to any last-minute questions, you’ll have a single point of contact who is overseeing your wedding photography and videography experience as a whole. You’re never handed off or left coordinating things on your own.

Your wedding day experience also remains consistent. Each of our team members spends months training alongside Michael not just learning our visual style, but how we approach a wedding day. That includes how we guide couples, anticipate moments, and move seamlessly within the flow of the day while still capturing everything that matters most. Our goal is that the experience feels just as supportive, calm, and intentional no matter who is capturing your wedding.

After the wedding, all editing is handled in-house by Michael and Amy. This is a huge part of how we maintain consistency so your final gallery reflects the same signature style you see throughout our portfolio, regardless of which team member was behind the camera.

So what’s different?

Simply put, the only difference is who shows up on your wedding day. Everything else about your experience with Author Made remains exactly the same.

How our team model works

Your experience working with the Author Made team is designed to feel seamless and supported every step of the way:

1. Inquiry & consultation

Your initial inquiry and consultation are directly with Michael. This is where we learn more about your wedding, your priorities for your photography and videography, and answer any questions you have.

2. View our team

Before booking, you can meet our team through our About page or by viewing our Real Weddings. We’ve added a feature to filter our galleries by specific team members so you can see how each person’s work blends seamlessly into the Author Made portfolio.

3. Booking & photographer assignment

Once you’re booked, we’ll assign a photographer (and/or videographer) based on availability and overall fit for your wedding. We are thoughtful and intentional in pairing the right team member with each wedding.

4. Planning & communication

Throughout your planning process, all communication remains with Michael. He will be your primary point of contact guiding you through timeline planning, logistics, and anything else needed to ensure your day runs smoothly.

5. Pre-wedding prep

As your wedding approaches, we thoroughly prepare your assigned team member. They’re briefed on your timeline, family photo list, key moments, and any specific priorities you’ve shared so nothing gets missed.

6. Your wedding day

On the day itself, your photographer and/or videographer will capture your wedding in our signature style while guiding and supporting you as needed. Our goal is for everything to feel seamless on the day of your wedding so you won’t need to manage or direct anything.

7. Editing & delivery

After the wedding, all editing is handled in-house by Michael and Amy. Every gallery is carefully edited and reviewed for consistency before being delivered to you.

How we choose, vet, and train our team

One of the biggest concerns couples have about a team model is who are these photographers, and how do you know they’ll deliver the same experience?. What’s more important than simply finding talented photographers is finding the right ones.

When we interview potential team members, we look for ones who not only have a strong technical foundation, but who also bring a competent, professional presence to a wedding day. The ability to guide, anticipate moments, and interact naturally with couples and families is just as important as the photos themselves.

From there, training is hands-on and ongoing. Each team member spends months working alongside Michael, learning not just how we shoot, but how we approach an entire wedding day from timeline awareness to directing moments to staying flexible and adaptable when wedding days go awry (which sometimes they do!).

This whole process involves a continuous refinement of both style and experience so that every wedding is handled with the same level of care, professionalism, and consistency.

We truly believe that if our team feels cared for and supported, they’ll in turn be better able to show up fully present and competently on your wedding day. We not only care about our clients’ experience, but our team members’ experience working with us as well.

Not all team models are the same

The experience you have with your wedding photographer can impact the way you view your photos after your big day. Beautiful images can be overshadowed by a poor day-of experience, and that’s why choosing the right team model is so crucial.

In some cases, studios operate more like a directory, pairing couples with an available photographer who directly handles everything after the initial booking. The result is that communication, pre-wedding planning, and day-of coordination can vary widely depending on who you’re assigned with.

Our approach is very different. We stay closely involved throughout the entire process. Communication is centralized, planning is guided, and every photographer on our team is trained specifically in how we approach wedding days, not just how we compose a photo.

Our goal is that your experience feels cohesive and supported from start to finish, eliminating the need to navigate different personalities or working styles.

Benefits of booking with our team model

At the end of the day, our team model is designed to make our clients’ experience more consistent and more reliable.

Here’s what that means for you:

  • A consistent, polished final gallery that reflects the work you see in our portfolio

  • A photographer who is confident in guiding your day

  • A seamless experience where communication, planning, and execution are all aligned

  • Built-in backup and support, so you’re never left navigating unexpected situations on your own

There is so much more to documenting a wedding day than simply showing up with a camera, and our priority is providing each of our clients with a seamless, stress-free experience.

Who this is a great fit for (and who it might not be)

Our team model works really well for couples who value consistency, guidance, and a streamlined experience.

It’s a great fit if you care about your overall wedding day experience with your photographer, trust a curated team rather than choosing from a large directory of individual photographers, and want to make sure there is always an option for flexibility or back-up without relying on solo individual should things go sideways before your big day.

That said, this model may not be the right fit for everyone, and that’s okay. If you feel strongly about booking one specific photographer because of their personality or style, or if you value building a personal relationship with the photographer showing up on your wedding day, then our team model might not be right for your wedding.

There’s no right or wrong answer; it simply comes down to what feels most comfortable for you.

Frequently asked questions about our team model

Can I request a specific team member?

If you have a preference to choose who’s a part of your wedding day team, you’re always welcome to ask. If they’re available for your date, we’re happy to accommodate when possible. We will let you know as early as possible if your requested team member isn’t available for your wedding.

Will I meet my photographer before the wedding?

Since all of your pre-wedding communication is handled by a single point of contact, you’ll meet your photographer on the day of your wedding. This keeps your planning experience simple and seamless while allowing us to streamline the briefing process with our team, ensuring no detail or logistic is missed prior to your wedding.

Where can I see my assigned photographer’s work?

You can view all of our galleries here, and even filter by specific team member to see how our process and portfolio is consistent across our studio.

Why isn’t Michael shooting weddings?

Michael’s focus is on overseeing the entire client experience so that every couple receives a consistent and supported experience. Michael may be present on your wedding day as a photography associate or team assistant while training up new team members.

Can I request Michael to shoot my wedding?

Michael is serving as lead photographer on select weddings only in 2026 and beyond. For couples truly prioritizing his involvement on their wedding day, we are happy to discuss options.

How do you ensure consistency in style?

Consistency comes not only from editing, but through hands-on training. Our photographers are trained in how we shoot and approach a wedding day, and all final images are edited in-house by Michael and Amy to maintain adherence to our signature style.

How will I know I’ll be happy with my photographer?

Every member of our team has been carefully selected and trained not just for their skills, but for how they show up on a wedding day. Our goal is that you feel fully supported and confident regardless of who is photographing your wedding.

What happens if my photographer can’t make it?

This is an experience that is extremely rare, but life can happen. Our team model provides multiple options for back-up in case of emergency, so there will always be someone who is fully trained and equipped to show up on your wedding day with little stress and interruption to you.

Will my photos look like what I see on your website?

Yes! Your final gallery will reflect the same style and quality you see throughout our portfolio, as maintaining consistency is our priority with our team model.
